Edinburg, Texas police were left scrambling for hours last week trying to find cyclist Eddie Arguelles after a fatal hit and run sent him flying into the bed of the suspect's pickup truck, according to a report by the Brownsville Herald.

Arguelles, an avid cyclist and University of Texas--Pan American faculty member, was cycling with a friend early on Thursday morning when he was fatally struck by a white pickup truck.

The high-speed impact launched Arguelles into the air.

The truck immediately fled the scene, while Arguelles' companion attempted to search the area for signs of his friend, unaware that Arguelles' lifeless body had landed in the bed of the pickup.

"The pickup failed to stop and render aid and from what I understand, [the driver] turned off their headlights, blacked out, and fled the scene at a high rate of speed," said Edinburg Police Lieutenant Oscar Trevino.

After searching the area for hours, police received a tip about a man attempting to dispose of a body in a nearby canal.

"Immediately, they observed that there was a body that was laying outside the pickup and there was evidence to show that the body was inside the bed of the pickup," said Lt. Trevino. "To sum it up-they were caught in the act of trying to dispose of this body."

Emilio Gomez, 23, has been since been charged with intoxicated manslaughter and faces up to 20 years in prison.
