Oscar Pistorius' neighbor Annette Stipp testified on Monday (March 24) that she heard gunshots and a woman screaming from a nearby house in the Silver Woods Estate in Pretoria on the night Pistorius killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day, 2013.

During her statement as a witness at the trial, Stipp said she woke up with a cough and, looking over at the clock on her husband's side of the bed, saw that it was 3:02 a.m. She then heard a loud noise. She asked her husband, Johan Stipp, who testified earlier during the trial about the same sequence of events, what the noise was. He said it was gunshots.

Following the loud noise came the sound of a woman screaming. Stipp went first to a smaller balcony and then to a larger balcony to get a better view of what was happening. She could see Pistorius' house from hers, and noticed that the lights were on in the bathroom and toilet of his house.

Her husband tried unsuccessfully to call the emergency number 10111. As he was getting dressed to go outside the investigate, Stipp noted that the time was 3:17 a.m. She added in court that the time was not exact, as their clock usually ran three or four minutes ahead of time.

She then heard the sound of a man's screams join the woman's screams, followed by three gunshots, followed by silence.

Stipp testified that she heard a total of six gunshots. Three when she first woke up, then three after hearing the woman and then the man screaming.

The prosecution says Pistorius deliberately shot model and reality TV star Steenkamp after the pair had an argument and she locked herself in the toilet. Pistorius said he fired in self-defence after he mistook her for a home intruder who had entered through the bathroom window.

Pistorius' defence says that Pistorius can sound like a woman when he screams. During his cross-examination, defence lawyer Kenny Oldwage tried to cast doubt on the accuracy of Stipp's memory of the events.

"When you exited for the first time onto the balcony, you say that you heard screams?", defence lawyer Oldwage asked.

"That's correct," Stipp said.

"But you cannot be 100 percent correct in making that assertion. Can you?", he asked.

"In my recollection I am 100 percent absolutely convinced it was a female," Stipp said.
