Official ferry death toll climbing

By Wednesday the number of people confirmed dead in the South Korean ferry disaster had risen to at least 146.

Divers working in darkness inside the hull of the sunken vessel are searching for bodies by feel.

Of the 476 passengers and crew on board, 339 were pupils and teachers from Danwon High School in Ansan.

In the city's Olympic Memorial Hall an altar's been set up for mourners to pay their respects.

(SOUNDBITE)(Korean) DANWON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT LEE SEUNG-MIN SAYING:

"Students keep crying as they watch the news reports. They've been offering chrysanthemum flowers but they can't do anything."

As relatives of those still missing wait for the recovery of their bodies tonnes of donated good have been sent to keep them going.

The goods have been given by well-wishers across the country.

Others have put messages of hope for the safe return of those still unaccounted for on a wall at the shelter where the relatives are staying.
