Ten people were killed when a minibus carrying commuters to work collided with a commuter train in southern Turkey on Thursday.

The bus was carrying 14 workers and one driver to an industrial estate in the area when it was struck by an oncoming train at a level crossing.

Ten of the passengers died at the scene and the remaining five sustained serious injuries. No passengers aboard the train were hurt.

Ambulances rushed the injured to hospitals in Mersin.

Local media is reporting that the crossing gate had malfunctioned and gave no warning that a train was coming.

Turkish State Railways has launched an investigation into the incident.
