Soccer club executive Melvin Sanders and a bodyguard were killed by gunmen on Monday night at his residence in northern Honduras.

According to witnesses, about 10 gunmen, dressed like members of the National Police, forced the residence's main entrance by kicking the gate, la Tribuna reported.

They then tied the security guards' hands and feet to avoid them running for help.

Sanders' bodyguard, Henry Adalid Ponce Galindo, 32, went to check on the noise. As soon as he opened the door the gunmen opened fire, killing him.

After entering the house, the gunmen walked to Sanders' bedroom and shot him several times while he was asleep.

His body was found face down next to his bed, with several bullets in his head and abdomen.

According to La Tribuna, the 40mm gun that was found in Sanders' bedroom is believed to have been owned by the victim.

Sanders was the director of the Atletico Choloma club. The motive of the shooting has yet to be determined.
