Nine Chinese crew members are missing after two cargo ships collided off Tokyo Bay early on Tuesday (March 18).

According to the Japan Times, the Panamanian-flagged Beagle III, a 12,630-ton vessel, was carrying 20 crew members while the South Korean Pegasus Prime, a 7,406-ton container ship, was carrying 14 people on board.

The incident happened at about 3:10 a.m. The two ships collided in the narrow waterway of Uraga, near Miura port, causing the Beagle III to capsize.

Eleven crew members from the Beagle were rescued at around 8 a.m. Patrol ships and a helicopter continued to search for the missing crew members for about five hours after the collision, the South China Morning post reported.

The crew of the Pegasus Prime were reportedly unhurt.

The cause of the collision is still unknown, but according to the coast guard the sea was not rough at the time of the accident.
