Political cartoonist, Ted Rall, was accused of racism after users on progressive political blog, Daily Kos, found the artist's depiction of President Barack Obama in a satirical cartoon ape-like.
The left-leaning Rall had been posting his work for free on his Daily Kos 'diary' for about a year when site administrators informed him that his depiction of the African-American president inappropriate. On November 27, he was sent the following message:
'Your depiction of Barack Obama as ape-like is intolerable. Being critical of Obama, even ferociously so, is not the problem. Through British and American history, blacks have been subject to racist depictions of themselves as monkeys and apes. No excuse is acceptable for replicating that history, no matter what your intent. If it happens again, your posting privileges will be suspended.'
Rall expressed his frustrations about the incident on his own blog, saying that 'The grounds for censoring my cartoons from the site — my drawing style — are beneath contempt. Anyone familiar with me and my work knows I'm not racist. My criticisms of the president are unrelated to his race, and to say otherwise in the absence of evidence is disgusting.'
He also wrote how disappointed he had become with the Democratic Party, the political group he associates with, 'This is what the Democratic Party has come to: so unable to face criticism, whether from left or right, that they stifle opposing voices.'
In response to the attacks, Rall posted a new cartoon, which can been seen on his blog.
