U.S., Ukraine sign $1 billion aid deal

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Ukrainian Finance Minister Oleksandr Shlapak signed a $1 billion loan guarantee in a ceremony at the U.S. Treasury Department on Monday (April 14).

The guarantee will complement a multi-billion dollar aid and reform program provided by the International Monetary Fund to the crisis-ridden country. Lew said the agreement underscored the United States' commitment to Ukraine.

"This agreement, which was supported by the President and both chambers of Congress on a bipartisan basis, demonstrated the United States' commitment to seeing Ukraine stabilize and move its democracy forward," Lew said. "With this loan guarantee agreement, the Ukrainian government is empowered to take steps to gain access to low-cost financing from international capital markets and help to ease Ukraine's economic transition, particularly for the most vulnerable."
