Orthodox Christians in Kiev are marking the start of Easter with prayers for Ukraine.

With yew branches and their faith, worshippers line up to be blessed on Palm Sunday.

On their minds, an end to their country's conflict.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ALLA IVANOVA, FROM CRIMEA, IN KIEV TO VISIT HER DAUGHTER, SAYING:

"I prayed for peace and that everything will be ok. This is the most important. If there is peace, there is happiness and there is life."

After months of protests, Ukraine now faces a separatist movement in the east.

Like in Crimea, pro-Russian residents are demanding referendums on whether to join Russia.

At the cathedral, more prayers for peace.

(SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) PETRO, KIEV CITIZEN, SAYING:

"I prayed for Ukraine, for God to save my Ukraine from invaders. And for all our children, so they won't know war."
