Arson attack: Chinese consulate in San Francisco set ablaze

The Chinese consulate in San Francisco, California was the target of an arson attack on Wednesday night (January 1). According to the consulate, video cameras recorded the arsonist carrying two cans of gasoline from a van parked on the street and then setting an embassy gate ablaze. Wang Chuan, a consulate spokesman, added that security footage also recorded the suspect throwing at least one bottle through the glass plate above the gate.
San Francisco police say an officer was the first responder to 1450 Laguna Street, where the front entrance was burning, and he tried to put out the flames with an extinguisher from his trunk. The officer called in the fire at around 9:33 p.m., and The San Francisco Fire Department said firefighters arrived roughly two minutes later. The blaze was fully extinguished about six minutes after that.
"We strongly condemn this despicable attack," said Chuan, reading from a statement at a brief news conference. "We urge the U.S. side to take all necessary measures to provide adequate protection for Chinese consular personnel and properties."
Chuan added that a small group of staff members was in the consulate when it was attacked.
The investigation has been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. No arrests have been made.
