Polls close in Afghanistan election, counting begins

5 years ago118 views

Afghanistan’s historic presidential election drew to a close on Saturday amid relief that attacks by Taliban fighters were fewer than feared.

The vote will bring the first-ever democratic transfer of power in a country that’s been plagued by conflict for decades.

It will take six weeks for votes to be counted. That’s because of the country’s rugged terrain.

If there is no outright winner, the two front-runners would go into a run-off at the end of May.
