A nine-year-old boy is the only survivor after an accident between a car and a truck killed four people believed to be members of his family in Victoria on Friday morning.

The boy was rescued by truck driver Ken McLeod, of nearby Yannathan, who witnessed the accident. McLeod said he pulled the crying boy from the car as flames engulfed both vehicles.

Authorities say the car had the right of way Friday morning when apparently the truck ran the stop sign and hit the vehicle. The force of the impact pushed the vehicle nearly 50m down the road, sent its engine into the ditch and started a fire.

The truck then rolled on top of the smaller car.

The boy suffered only superficial wounds, and is being attended to by social workers in the hospital.

Police said the victims were a 37-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman, a six-year-old girl and two-year-old boy.

The 27-year-old truck driver, a contract worker for Asixa transport company, had minor injuries and is under police guard at the hospital.

Police charged Jobandeep Gill, of Noble Park, with four counts of culpable driving causing death, four counts of dangerous driving causing death, one count of reckless conduct endangering life and one count of failing to stop at a stop sign.

Gill will remain under police guard until he appears in court for a hearing expected on Tuesday.
