STORY: Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was welcomed by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Thursday as she began a one-day visit that will also include a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

The 87-year-old monarch, stood in the courtyard of the Quirinale palace as the British and Italian anthems were played by the honor guard.

After lunch the Queen will travel to the Vatican for a private meeting with Pope Francis. There have been seven popes during the Queen's six-decade reign, of which she has met five.

Vatican insiders have said it is highly unlikely that any discussion about the Falkland islands will take place with the Argentinean pope.
