A beach on the shores of eastern Libya was the site of a massacre on Monday night.

Seven Egyptian Christians were executed on a beach in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on the evening on February 24.

Reuters reports that unidentified gunmen entered a building known to house Egyptian workers.

The gunmen reportedly went door to door demanding to know the religion of each apartment's occupant.

After rounding up seven Egyptian Christians, the gunmen led them away to a nearby beach, where the seven were shot, execution style, with bullets to the back of the head.

All seven were killed and local police confirmed the victims were Egyptian Christians.
Just over a month ago, a British man and a woman from New Zealand were also shot execution-style on another beach around 100 kilometers to the west of the capital Tripoli.

No claims of responsibility have been made, but suspicion has fallen on the hard-line Islamist group Ansar al-Shari, the group blamed by the U.S. for the deadly 2011 attack on its Benghazi embassy.

Libya has found containing various militias and terror groups difficult since the fall of long time dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi.

The nation is awash in weapons and the central government holds little power over the militia groups that rule most of the country.

Authorities in Tripoli have found it exceptionally difficult to establish control over the eastern city of Benghazi, where the uprising to overthrow Gaddafi first began in 2011.

Gaddafi ruled Libya for over 40 years, but was ousted and assassinated by militia fighter after air support from NATO helped tip the balance of power towards the Libyan rebels.
