The choice is between centre-left Prime Minister Robert Fico and independent candidate Andrej Kiska.

In the first round, Fico got 28% of the vote, ahead of Kiska, who gained 24%.

If Fico wins, his social-democratic Smer party will have full control of both parliament and the presidency Many voters fear the 49-year-old would have too much power

Newcomer Andrej Kiska, is a businessman-turned-philanthropist who has the backing of right-wing voters as well as those who distrust mainstream political parties.

Polls close at 22:00 CET and the results are expected overnight.
