Last kiss goodbye: London artist shot dead while protecting his family from gunmen

London-based artist, Clinton De Menezes, 43, was shot dead as he tackled gunmen who burst into his first wedding anniversary party in Durban, South Africa.

His wife Nicola Saward, kissed him and thanked him for being a good father before closing his eyes. The man's 7-year-old daughter Eva also had a chance to say a heartbreakingly tearful goodbye.

De Menezes and his family were celebrating the couple's first wedding anniversary at friend's house in South Africa during New Year's Eve, when four gunmen climbed onto a balcony during the party. De Menezes hid his wife and daughter Eva in a bathroom before going out to confront the robbers.

He went to aid of a friend who was trying to fend off one of the gunmen with a plastic chair but was shot in chest.

The four men escaped with a wallet and three mobile phones.

De Menezes was a noted artist who had had work exhibited in galleries across London and at the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. He and his family moved to Kenya last July after his wife took a job as a manager with the oil firm Tullow.

Four suspects have been arrested and police recovered a 9mm pistol from the scene.
