More than twenty people were killed after a bus in the Philippines fell from an elevated expressway and landed on a van early Monday morning (December 16).

The accident took place while the transit bus was traveling south-bound on the elevated part of the South Luzon Expressway running through Parañaque City. While passing another vehicle, the bus lost control and rammed through the railings of the Skyway and landed on an aluminum van running on the service road below.

At least 22 people, including the driver of the van, were killed by the fallen bus. Bus driver Carmelo Calascas was among the eight people rushed to hospitals following the accident.

According to driver Irene Sisperez whose car was overtaken by the Don Marino transit bus before it broke through the expressway railings, the bus had been travelling past the the 80-kilometre per hour speed limit.

A Skyway officer told ANC News that the wet road may have caused the bus driver to lose control of the vehicle.

A Dimples Star Transport bus had fallen from the Skyway on June 26, 2011. Three people were killed.
