Fashion rises in the east

Japan Fashion Week kicked off with Thai designer Pim Sukhahuta showing her new collection. Sretsis – sisters spelled backwards – is a family affair, one of the designer’s sisters manages the business, and another designs the jewellery.

Pim Sukhahuta explained why they’d made the trip from Thailand: “The reason for showing our collection in Tokyo at Japan Fashion Week is because we have been working with a Japanese partner for three or four years. Market growth here is fast, and has the potential to increase, so I think this is a good opportunity to show the Sretsis collection.”

Japanese designers like Mitsuru Nishizaki also have an eye on the global market. Nishizaki, who is with the high fashion brand Ujoh, said: “Step by step, certainly in the future it would be wonderful to venture out internationally.”

The Dressedundressed label is particularly known for merging gender identities with unisex designs.Their latest collection, for this autumn/winter, was designed by young duo Takeshi Kitazawa and Emiko Sato and inspired by Japanese gardens.

Kitazawa spoke about the inspiration: “I wanted to translate Japan’s traditional theme into something new and modern using the senses of my generation. This is how we created the show this time. The strength of our brand is Japanese minimalism. So, this season we challenged ourselves to see how we could make it into our style.”
