Seattle firefighters: drunk firefighters assault homeless man for sleeping on memorial
  • 10 years ago
Two off-duty Seattle firefighters, Robert Howell and Scott Bullene, as well as Bullene's girlfriend Mia Jarvinen, allegedly assaulted a homeless and disabled veteran last Saturday after the drunken trio got out of a Sounders game.

The homeless guy, known as "Sarge", was sleeping on the Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Pioneer Square around 5PM. This behavior apparently struck Jarvinen as being disrespectful to fallen firefighters. She began yelling at and kicking Sarge. The two men joined and kicked him in the face.

According to witnesses, what followed was nothing short of a riot. The firefighters beat at least one other homeless men in addition to Sarge, giving him two black eyes. Several homeless people gathered around the brawl and engaged in shouting matches with the trio. Eye witness Steve Banfield wrote on his blog that the firefighters yelled insults at the homeless crowd, including, "living off my tax dollars." In the end, Sarge allegedly stabbed Bullene in the left arm out of self defense.

Banfield also wrote that he called the police when homeless Sarge was beaten, but police didn't come for at least 20 minutes. However, as soon as firefighter Bullene was stabbed, four police cars arrived at the scene.

The Seattle police and fire department will decide on the status of the firefighters on Monday.
