Journalist Emma Beals speaks about Syria's war

Three years ago, a peaceful protest in southern Syria triggered a conflict that's reduced much of the country to rubble and forced millions out of their homes.

The conflict started in March 2011, when anti government protesters took to the streets in Deraa. Dozens were killed in what was the start of a brutal security crackdown.

Now, three years on - with more than 140,000 lives lost and millions more displaced, there is still no sign of an end to the civil war.

Emma Beals is an independent journalist who’s been reporting from Syria since December 2012. She speaks to Al Jazeera about some of the towns she recently visited which have become battlefields.
