Lapel camera footage shows APD shooting Shaine Sherrill

Lapel camera footage showing Albuquerque police officers shooting 34-year-old Shaine Sherrill on December 1 of last year was released by the police department this week.

The incident began when police responded to a domestic disturbance call. The footage shows an officer arriving at the scene, jumping out of his car, and running at Sherrill who appeared to have something in his hands. According to reports, police said they believed he had a gun, though it is now believed it was either a knife or a brake pad.

The officer wearing the camera is shown firing at Sherrill several times. Sherrill falls to the ground and other officers rush in to contain him. While bleeding from the gunshot wounds and almost motionless, the officers handcuff him.

The video continues to show two other men being apprehended and handcuffed; they comply willingly. Their identities were not made clear, though it does not appear that they were involved with Sherrill.

The officer then returns to Sherrill who is at this point being tended to by several officers. Blood pours from his abdomen and the officers help with his injuries.

Sherrill suffered a broken arm and leg, punctured lung and ruptured spleen in the incident. He was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, though a judge dismissed the charge at the end of January, stating that the police department was too slow to file the crime.

Sherrill, who has been convicted of more than a dozen felonies, is currently in prison for an unrelated crime. His lawyers are currently suing the police department for the December 1 incident.
