Top banana as Fyffes and Chiquita merge

The world’s largest banana company has been created following the merger of Irish fruit firm Fyffes and US rival Chiquita.

The new ChiquitaFyffes is expected to process some 160 million boxes of bananas every year.

This far outstrips any other banana company in operation.

Fyffes shareholders will take a 49.3 percent stake in the of the new organisation, while Chiquita will hold 50.7 percent.

It is hoped the deal will reduce costs and boost sales.
