Tunisia's former president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali fled the country three years ago today, bringing his 24-year autocratic rule to an end. His resignation unexpectedly sparked a pro-democracy movement in the Middle East and North Africa.

The revolution in Tunisia was ignited when a young fruit vendor in the city of Sidi Bouzid set himself alight in a protest against high-handed rule in the nation. The death of the young man prompted nationwide protests, forcing Ben Ali to flee to Saudi Arabia.

Following Tunisia, 'Arab Spring' revolutions erupted in several other countries, helping to spell an end to three other governments, including those in Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

Jordan and Morocco responded to the demands for change by rewriting their constitutions, while pro-democracy protests and demonstrations also swept Syria, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Oman and Kuwait.

Even at the beginning, many were skeptical of the "Arab Spring" revolutions. As regimes fell, the region at large has plunged into general unrest since the onset of Arab Spring.
