Man charged with failed attempted kidnapping and bodily injury in Japan

A 29-year-old Japanese man was arrested on Monday for allegedly threatening a 10-year-old girl at knifepoint and taking her in handcuffs last July in a failed attempted kidnapping. The accused, Kentaro Makino, worked in the ward office in Tokyo's Adachi Ward. He faces charges of attempted kidnapping and bodily injury.

Makino crept into an apartment building in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward and handcuffed the girl, who just come home, at knifepoint. He tried to put the girl into a large bag, but she screamed and fought, so he gave up and ran away.

Police identified Makino by looking into who bought handcuffs. He confessed to the charges during questioning, saying he wanted to kidnap the girl so he could molest her. Police found roughly 2,000 child-pornography photobooks in his apartment. The girl escaped with minor injuries. Makino is also accused of committing similar crimes in Adachi last September.
