Fraternity hazing death: Baruch student Michael Deng's death a homicide
  • 10 years ago
Charges will filed after a Pi Delta Psi fraternity pledging event that resulted in the death of a Baruch College student was ruled a homicide by a Pennsylvania coroner.

Thirty members of the New York City school's Pi Delta Psi fraternity were on a retreat in the Poconos when the event happened.

Freshman and fraternity pledge Chun Hsien "Michael" Deng was taking part in a hazing ritual called the "glass ceiling," in which pledges run a gauntlet of fraternity brothers while blindfolded and wearing a backpack with a bowling ball-sized weight.

Deng, 19, was knocked down several times and sustained multiple life-threatening injuries during the game.

Instead of calling 911, the students changed his clothes, searched the internet for information on his injuries and threw away fraternity paraphernalia. Deng was finally taken to the hospital about two hours later. He died the next day.

Pi Delta Psi has suspended all pledging activities pending an investigation.
