Benedict looks on Pope Francis inducts new cardinals

As Pope Francis appoints 19 new cardinals from around the world at the Vatican -- he's not the only pope in Saint Peter's Basilica...

Pope Emeritus Benedict makes a surprise appearance at the papal ceremony.

While those present were encouraged not to clap, Francis' former predecessor was given an unexpected round of applause.

The surprise visit aside -- Pope Francis is urging the newly appointed cardinals to do away with internal rivalries, which had plagued Benedict's papacy.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) POPE FRANCIS SAYING:

"I will tell you what the Church needs: she needs you, your cooperation, and even more your communion, with me and among yourselves."

Cardinals play a critical role and serve as the Pope's closest advisors.

Some of the new appointees will join existing cardinals, and will be eligible to take part in the election of a future pope.
