Tokyo train shunts another, crash leaves 19 injured

A Tokyu Toyoko line train linking Tokyo and Yokohama rammed into another train stopped at Motosumiyoshi Station in Kawasaki City south of Tokyo on Friday night after overrunning the stop line by about 30 meters. The first and second cars of the train derailed during the collision. The driver said he had applied the brakes, but not in time, according to Kanagawa prefectural police.

According to transport authority investigations, the train was running at 80 kilometers per hour on a section where trains can travel at 95 kph, but it failed to stop in less than 200 meters as is usually the case when the emergency brakes are applied. Tokyu said the driver of the train applied the brakes about 600 meters before the station, but it still rammed into the other train at 30 to 40 kph.

The Tokyu Toyoko Line has an automatic train control system, but it does not work when the emergency brakes are applied. Transport authorities have launched an investigation into the collision which railway operator Tokyu Corporation believes may have been caused by heavy snow that hit Tokyo and the surrounding area.
