At least seven Somalis are killed when a remote-controlled bomb aimed at a UN convoy tore through cars and tea shops just outside the capital's international airport Thursday.

The Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab is claiming responsibility for the attack.

(SOUNDBITE) (Somali) EYE WITNESS MAHAMED ABDI AHMED, SAYING (ROUGH TRANSLATION):

"I was shocked when I saw a lot of people lying on the ground seeking help in front of the airport gate."

The strike was another reminder of the threat still posed by the rebels after African peacekeepers pushed them out of the capital in 2011.
