Like many techno artists, Marcel Fengler is infinitely more approachable than his music is. On record, his style tends to be dark and confrontational, which isn't exactly surprising given the crew he rolls with (he's a resident at Berghain, producer on Osgtut Ton, and longtime friend of Marcel Dettmann and Norman Nodge). But in person he's just the opposite: cheery, easy-going and humbly devoted to his craft. Maybe this explains the pleasant tension in his music—pummeling but funky, serious but melodic, metallic but also very human.

Though you might not guess it from his modest demeanor, Marcel Fengler is smashing it. His music is held in high esteem by techno fans around the world. Not long ago he was a bedroom producer making tracks specifically for the club; this year he wrote music for an avant-garde ballet and released his first artist album, Fokus, on Ostgut Ton. In this episode of Three Cuts, we catch Fengler at a high point, and hear the tracks that got him there.
