Possible serial killer on the loose in Virginia

In a wealthy suburb of the nation's capital, a killer is on the loose. Three unsolved murders in Alexandria Virginia are keeping police on their toes, and making neighbors think twice before answering their doors. In 2003, Nancy Dunning was shot inside her home. A sad but unremarkable occurrence until November 2013, when, less than two miles away, Ronald Kirby was shot in his home as well.

Then, on Thursday, Ruthanne Lodato, resident of the same neighborhood but unknown to the other victims, was also shot in her home. According to NBC4, "At this point police say there is no evidence linking this crime to a shooting a mile away last year, and also the killing of Nancy Dunning, the former Sherrif's wife back in 2003"

But, just like the other victims, Ruthanne Lodato invited the killer inside, where she was shot in broad daylight. Her elderly mother's caretaker was also there when the killer attacked, and sustained a gunshot to the arm. Yet she survived, and described a bearded white man with thinning hair to police.

Unfortunately, the description is not of an uncommon type of man in this affluent suburb. Police are struggling to find a clue, but so far the only thing these three victims had in common was that none of them knew they were next.
