Protesters set up piano concert on Kiev barricades

It was a musical contest, albeit one of a new kind. On one side, Ukrainian protesters wanting to oust Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich invited guests to play piano on the barricade, on the other the riot police they have been facing for nearly three months played taped pop music.

The protesters erected a piano, painted with the colours of Ukrainian flag, on top of one of the barricade blocking the access to Kiev's Independence Square.

Players took turn to play their favorite songs for an audience made of protesters and curious Kiev residents, hoping their art could boost the spirit and the morale of the protesters.

The riot police facing them in the heavily-fortified protest zone reacted by playing taped pop music.

Yanukovich turned down in November a free trade agreement with the European Union in exchange with closer ties with Russia - as well as hard cash and cheap gas.
