Red Hot Chili Peppers faked Super Bowl halftime
  • 10 years ago
Super Bowl XLVIII saw the Seattle Seahawks completely destroy Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos 43-8 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey last Sunday. Despite the game being a total blowout, Fox was able to break the TV audience record with 111.5 million TV people tuning to watch the big game.

If the Fox sports numbers are right, then that beats the previous high of 111.34 million who watched the Super Bowl in 2012 on NBC. The number of 18- to 49-year-olds watching the Super Bowl did decline a bit from last year. The last five Super Bowl are now the five most-watched programs in U.S. TV history.

The Sunday night halftime show with Bruno Mars also broke records. Approximately 115.3 viewers tuned in to watch Bruno and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Last year, only 110.8 million people watched Beyonce, while 114 million people who had nothing better to do in 2012 watched Madonna.

So basically the biggest audience in U.S. TV history was on hand to watch the Red Hot Chili Peppers play air guitar and pretend drums. In an open letter to fans, Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea confirmed that he pretended to play bass during the halftime show.

In a letter posted on the band's official website, Flea said he was pretending during the song "Give it Away." He also said that the NFL made it "clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums and guitar would be pre-recorded." Wait, people still listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
