Texas Democrat Wendy Davis lands in hot water over misleading biography

Texas State Senator Wendy Davis has come under criticism after a lengthy profile by the Dallas Morning News revealed notable discrepancies in her much-touted life story.

"I'm learning about using broader, looser language. I need to be more focused on the detail," the gubernatorial candidate told the newspaper.

The revelations have led to attacks against Davis, whose filibuster against abortion regulations last summer propelled her into the national spotlight, from the conservative right,.

Davis had been hoping to parlay her status as a liberal hero to become the first Democrat governor of Texas in almost a quarter-century.

Her campaign captured the attention of both the public and the media with a great American up-by-one's-bootstraps narrative of a 19-year-old single trailer-home mother who through sheer will made it all the way to Harvard Law School.

According to Dallas Morning News senior political writer Wayne Slater, however, Davis may have been telling tall tales and left out key facts from her biography.

"The basic elements of the narrative are true, but the full story of Davis' life is more complicated," writes Slater. "As often happens when public figures aim to define themselves. In the shorthand version that has developed, some facts have been blurred."

Key points that differ from include:

"Davis was 21, not 19, when she was divorced. She lived only a few months in the family mobile home while separated from her husband before moving into an apartment with her daughter.

"A single mother working two jobs, she met Jeff Davis, a lawyer 13 years older than her, married him and had a second daughter. He paid for her last two years at Texas Christian University and her time at Harvard Law School, and kept their two daughters while she was in Boston. When they divorced in 2005, he was granted parental custody, and the girls stayed with him. Wendy Davis was directed to pay child support."

What else did Davis make up?
