Silicon Valley exec killed trying to save man from train in Santa Clara

A Silicon Valley marketing executive was killed and another man was critically injured when they were hit by a train at Santa Clara's Caltrain station on the evening of January 20th.

Philip Scholz was waiting on a raised platform at Santa Clara station for his train home when he saw a man down on the tracks. Surveillance footage showed Scholz drop his backpack, lay down on his belly and reached for the stranger on the tracks. As the train approached, the person did want to get out of the way. The express train that was not scheduled to stop at Santa Clara station and was traveling between 50 and 70 mph struck the men at about 5:30 p.m. While Scholz died at the scene, the other person miraculously survived and remains hospitalized in a critical condition. The man is still not capable of speaking to police about the incident.

Friends and co-workers were shocked at news of the accident, but not surprised to hear that their friend had died trying to save someone else.

Scholz leaves behind his wife of seven years, Emily, whom he met back in college. Emily Scholz said she's not concerned with what investigators find out about why the man was on the tracks.

"It just doesn't matter at this point," she said. "I just want people to know that he wasn't doing something stupid, or that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He wasn't in some kind of argument.

"He was doing the right thing when it happened."
