ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

A gray whale calf lost its way and was dragged onto a beach in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon in Mexico's Baja California Sur.

The small mammal was separated from its mother and stranded on the beach.

Workers from Mexico's environmental protection agency, Profepa, were alerted and immediately headed out to the area.

Rescuers rolled the whale on the sand and then waited for the incoming tide before coaxing the whale back into the water.

The calf was very disoriented, but once in the lagoon, it headed towards deeper water, Profepa said.

It's still uncertain whether the calf has been reunited with its mother.
