Merkel signals door still open for EU deal with Ukraine

Ukraine has been gripped by mass unrest since President Viktor Yanukovich walked away from an EU deal last November.

Despite the Prime Minster stepping down and the resignation of the cabinet the demonstrators are digging in.

Russia is saying it will honor its bailout agreement. But the EU is not going quietly.

On Wednesday European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton meets with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

And in Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel weighs in

12. (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING:

"It remains unchanged that the door for the signing of the association agreement with the EU remains open for Ukraine and it still applies that the risk of an 'either...or' in the relationship of the eastern countries with Russia must be overcome and I am convinced that it can be resolved in patient negotiations."
