Kiev residents on Sunday (January 26) cleaned up the International Convention Centre, also known as Ukraine House, hours after protesters stormed the building forcing out police who had been holed up inside overnight.
Over the past several days, protesters had already occupied Kiev City Hall and the Agricultural Ministry, and blocked off the Energy Ministry building, in increasingly violent protests against President Viktor Yanukovich's rule.
On Saturday night (January 25) Yanukovich offered top government posts to opposition leaders on the condition that protesters leave occupied buildings, which the leaders turned down.
Kiev residents streamed into Ukraine House on Sunday morning, sweeping up broken glass and debris from the fracas the night before.
Members of a make-shift militia, carrying sticks and the occasional police shield, marched through the building and promised to ensure the safety of Ukrainian citizens.
