The Olympic torch arrived in Russia's southern city of Volgograd on Monday (January 20), the scene of two suicide bombings that killed at least 34 people last month.

Torchbearers were surrounded by security in the deserted streets of central Volgograd.

One of the torch bearers was Maxim Opalev, the Olympic champion in rowing. He handed the torch over to the head of the local prenatal centre who took it down to the fast underground tram.

Later in the day the torch was taken to a local ice-skating rink.

Earlier on Monday an Islamic militant group said in a video posted online that it was behind the December bombings and threatened to attack the Sochi Winter Olympics.

The Winter Games will kick off on February 7.
