A wave of wet weather continued to batter northern Italy on Sunday (January 19), causing heavy flooding and forcing emergency workers to evacuate about 100 people from their homes in the village of Bastiglia.

The River Secchia river overflowed on the outskirts of Modena and spread north through a number of many smaller towns and villages.

In Bastiglia, residents who had earlier parked their cars on dry ground, returned later to find them submerged in a torrent of water.

Some residents were trapped in their homes after failing to leave in time before water flooded in.

Emergency crews are monitoring the situation and continuing evacuations in the worst affected areas.
