Mursi supporters clash with police at Cairo University

One student was killed as protesters backing ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi clashed with riot police at Cairo University on Thursday (January 16).

The clashes took place a day after Egyptians voted on a constitutional referendum planned as a first step on a political roadmap set out by the military-backed government that removed him.

There have been sporadic clashes at universities in Cairo and around Egypt for several months, and which have intensified following the passage of a law that severely restricts the right to protest.

State media reported on Thursday that Egypt's new constitution was overwhelmingly approved in the referendum, an expected victory that nudges army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ever closer to a bid for the presidency.
