Russia tightens security in Sochi before Olympics

With the Sochi winter Olympics just around the corner, Russia's law enforcement officers are on high alert.

They have tightened access restrictions to the Black Sea resort, with a new traffic scheme that gives priority to Olympic transport.

And residents have mixed feelings about the heavy police presence.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SOCHI RESIDENT, MARIA GOLOSNITSKAYA, SAYING:

"Some people are uncomfortable about it. A few days ago we went to Marimol and had to pass through a metal frame and show IDs, but I think in the current situation it is necessary. Of course it takes time, but so what?"

Aware that the success or failure of the Sochi Games will help shape his legacy, Putin has ordered a boost in security. It comes after two suicide bomb attacks killed at least 34 people in the city of Volgograd, just over a week ago.
