Over 180 arrested in major China drug raid

A major drug bust in rural China.

It happened in the village of Boshe in southern China's Guangdong province, state media reported Friday.

The village is reportedly notorious for drug production.

Police say it's been providing one third of the crystal meth consumed in all of China.

More than 180 people in the village were arrested in the raid.

Police say 20 percent of the entire village population was involved in the drug ring in one way or another.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF GUANGDONG PROVINCIAL PUBLIC SECURITY BUREAU, GUO SHAOBO SAYING:

"Drug production was run by families, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends, and had been industrialized in the village. Worse still, they were under the protection of local officials, village and township cadres, and local police."
