Rescue efforts are underway in Antarctica where 52 scientists and tourists have been stranded on a Russian ship trapped in the ice since Christmas Eve.

A helicopter from a Chinese icebreaker helped ferry the passengers to an Australian ship that is now enroute to Tasmania- a mere 1500 nautical miles away.

The group's journey was meant to commemorate the 100th anniversary of an Antarctic journey led by famed Australian explorer Douglas Mawson.

The group is expected to reach Tasmania in mid-January.
