New York's new mayor Bill de Blasio sworn in

The first Democratic mayor of New York city in more than two decades has been formally sworn in. Bill de Blasio took the oath of office from fellow Democrat, former US President Bill Clinton in a traditional ceremony on the steps of City Hall using a bible once owned by Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Fifty-two-year-old de Blasio who succeeds billionaire Michael Bloomberg has vowed to narrow the gap between rich and poor in The Big Apple.
“We will give life to the hope of so many in our city. We will succeed as one city and we know this won’t be easy, it will require all that we can muster and it won’t be accomplished only by me, it will be accomplished by all of us,” he said in his inauguration speech.
Before the formalities and as is traditional the mayor was first sworn in outside his home just after midnight on New Years Day.
De Blasio – an unabashed liberal is the 109th mayor of the city. On the campaign trail he presented himself as anti-Bloomberg who had held office for twelve years.
