US security proposals for Palestine thrown out

The Arab League has rejected proposals from the US which would allow Israeli soldiers to be stationed on the eastern border of a future Palestinian state.
It highlights the challenge facing an American effort to wrap up a peace deal by April.
At an emergency meeting in Cairo – called at the request of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas – the Arab League’s Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said there could not be any Israeli soldiers in the territory of a future Palestine.
The meeting came a day after the block described the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks as being “in crisis.”
US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that his country has presented “some thoughts” on security arrangements, but given no details.
Israel and the Palestinians resumed direct peace talks in July after a three-year break, but there has been little public sign of progress.
Speaking from Cairo, euronews correspondent Mohammed Shaikhibrahim said: “Getting more support in the ongoing negotiations and asking Arab countries to assume their responsibilities towards Palestine are the most important points of this meeting. It’s the central issue, according to those attending the meeting.”
