Aleppo targeted in air strike by Syrian government jets for third successive day

At least 13 people are reported to have been killed on the third day of air strikes targeting Aleppo, Syria’s largest urban centre and the country’s commercial hub.

Images from amateur videos posted on social networks – and so not independently verified – allegedly show the aftermath in a street in the rebel held Shaar district.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights – whose information is provided by activists on the ground – said at least two children died in the latest attack.

On Sunday it was reported 76 people including 28 children died in a government backed assault from the air. Helicopters dropped barrels packed with explosives on areas of the city.

The opposition has controlled parts of Aleppo for more than a year.

The United Nations has scheduled a peace conference for January 22 in Geneva. It has not been decided who will attend but on Tuesday US Secretary of State John Kerry said efforts could be made to broaden the base of the moderate opposition.
