Relief arrives in CAR

Food and other supplies have finally arrived to starving refugees in the Central African Republic.

Thousands of people displaced by violence in the country lined up in the capital as humanitarian agencies distributed beans and flour.

Intense fighting between Muslim and Christian militias has forced over half a million people to flee their homes this year.

Officials from the U.N.'s World Food Programme said a quarter of the country's population are being identified as 'food insecure'.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ERTHARIN COUSIN, SAYING:

"We've identified that there are probably 1.3 million people who are food insecure. And we also know that because the farmers haven't been able to access their farms that we've missed this years planting season, so that when we get to the harvest in the spring this will probably be even more exacerbated."
