A funeral service for Nelson Mandela

South Africa's prominent personalities, world leaders and VIPs pay their respects to Nelson Mandela in a funeral service in his ancestral village of Qunu.

Candles on the stage symbolise each of Mandela's 95 years.

Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima representing the family, narrated Mandela's origins.

His granddaughter Nandi recalls how Mandela loved telling stories from his youth, usually poking fun at himself.

(SONUDBITE) (English) MANDELA'S GRANDDAUGHTER, NANDI MANDELA, SAYING:

"One of his favorite stories was of him chasing a piece of chicken with a fork at a dinner table with the family of a girl that he wanted as his girlfriend."

Leaders from around Africa joined the funeral service, calling Mandela one of Africa's greatest sons and an inspiration for their own countries.

Malawi President Joyce Banda, the second female leader on the continent, hailed Mandela as a role model.
