South Africans celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela

South Africans are celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela.

Though they are saddened by the news of his death, his accomplishments are much more pronounced.

Mourners gather outside of Mandela's house, and reflect on his legacy.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MOURNER, SAYING:

"So I was very sad to hear the news but I'm also happy that he gets to rest in peace, you know it's good for him. But what he did for this country is amazing, he united us all together."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MOURNER, SAYING:

"I'm obviously, I'm very shocked, I'm saddened and it's really hurtful because yeah I was born in 1994 and he fought for everything."

Although Mandela had been ailing for nearly a year, on Thursday South African president Jacob Zuma took to the airwaves and made it official.
