New York: at least four feared dead in metro train derailment near Bronx station

At least four people are feared dead after a train derailed north of New York. It’s reported that 63 people have been injured, of whom six are in a serious condition according to authorities.
The accident happened as the Metro-North train rounded a large curved section of the track just metres short of Spuyten Duyvil station.
It’s understood that at least five of the carriages came off the tracks, with one passenger who travels on the line regularly saying that the train seemed to be travelling faster than usual.
Emergency services have mounted a major operation. A spokesman for the fire service said the injured had been transferred to local hospitals.
Earlier reports that some of the carriages had gone into the nearby Hudson River were denied but one was toppled and lying perilously close to the water.
Rescue workers were searching along the shoreline and in the waterway for survivors.
The train was a diesel with seven carriages which were being pushed by the locomotive southward. (The Metro-North line is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.)
